I can describe how the structure of the Ancient Athens Government provided opportunities for citizens to participate in decision making

I can describe how identity, status, and class structure impacted citizenship in Ancient Athens

Grade 6 Social Studies

In grade six, we have been learning about some important places in Ancient Athens, including the Bouleuterion, Pnyx Hill, and the Agora. We have also learned about what political events took place in each location. Students have spent time reading and listening about citizens, citizens' wives, metics, metics' wives, and slaves and have learned that most of the people living in Ancient Athens actually were not allowed to participate in government decision making.

Over the last 2 weeks, students have been working on creating a series of TikTok videos from the perspective of the different people in Ancient Athens. They worked in groups to write scripts, checked to make sure their work meets the criteria, then moved on to filming with the iPads at school. Everyone was super engaged in this work and we are all very excited to watch the videos together.

Tasks like this give students the opportunity to practice many important learning skills, including collaborating in a group, following instructions, meeting all the criteria, and managing time.

I can create narratives that develop setting, plot, and character; I can use suspense, figurative language, and dialogue in story writing; I can enhance personal style and voice through careful selection of words; I can edit writing for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

We started writing our second story of the year. We began the same way: our choice of 2 picture prompts

We began planning our stories using a planning diamond.

Student's were reminded to pay attention to a few things when writing their stories:

  • Be careful on how much dialogue your story has - a good rule is 2 pieces of dialogue, then something else (action, description)

  • Have a balance of dialogue, action, description

  • Make sure your story makes sense!

  • Have a clear beginning, elaborative detail (explain a setting, character, or feeling), middle, and end

  • Don’t forget a problem or conflict

  • Try to include a figure of speech!

We also learned about 8 figures of speech.

We are going to try to include at least 1 in our stories!

 Welcome back!

We had a great first week of 2024! We had so much fun rollerblading with our Alien Inline residency. We learned some pretty awesome tricks too.

Math

I can describe the location of the vertices of a polygon on the Cartesian plane using coordinates.

This week, we used our knowledge of the Cartesian plane and ordered pairs to create a picture on a grid. We had to create an image in all 4 quadrants. We had some very creative ideas!

I can create an image of a polygon in the Cartestian plane by translating a polygon.

I cam create an image of a polygon in the Cartesian plane by reflecting the polygon over a line of reflection.

We also started learning about Transformations. We learned that a translation is also called a slide and a reflection is also known as a flip. We practiced creating our own translation and reflections using geoboards too!
