Feb 20 - 23

This week, we had 2 opportunities to use loose parts! Loose parts are various materials that can be designed or created to make pictures or tell a story. Our first time at loose parts, we were invited to create anything we liked. The second time, we were asked to create a picture that told a story. We are going to use our loose parts design as our picture prompt for our next story.

I can create narratives that develop setting, plot, and character; I can use suspense, figurative language, and dialogue in story writing; I can enhance personal style and voice through careful selection of words; I can edit writing for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

We then began planning our story using the planning diamond. Next week we will work on writing our first drafts.

Feb 12 - 14

 Happy Family Day weekend!

I can respond to texts by summarizing main ideas and providing supporting evidence from the texts.

We have been working with a variety of texts, such as nonfiction, articles, and informational texts. We have been working on our comprehension strategies by writing down or drawing important information from texts. We have started our new novel study on the book Alone. As we read the book, we jot down important words, phrases, or images!

This week, the Grade 6s took learned about Black History Month. We read Meet Viola Desmond and created a visual journal page.

We also chose between 5 articles to read through and add to our visual journal page.

This week, we talked about the importance of thinking critically and evaluating information we find on the Internet. A few of us were fooled by the famous Tree Octopus! We talked about trustworthy websites (ending in gov) and reading through websites thoroughly.

We also began our next research project. On constellations! We have been working really hard creating a Google Slides presentation. Here is some of our work so far

We continued to use our vertical whiteboards this week! We had a lot of fun solving some tricky problems.

 I can solve algebraic equations

This week, we worked on solving algebraic equations using the balancing strategy. We also showcased our understanding by creating our own equations using manipulatives.

Balancing scales task:

Choose a larger manipulative to = x

Choose a smaller manipulative to = another amount. Be sure to make a legend showing what the smaller piece is = to

Create a balanced scale so someone else can write the equation and solve for x

We also worked on some problem solving using vertical whiteboards! Can you find the pattern rule for this problem?

And last but not least... we had the BEST time cross country skiing!!
